Muzzles do a lot of the same things as a standard gag and more. Not only can they be used to keep the wearer (relatively) quiet, but they transform the face as well, revealing aspects of their personality they keep tucked away in polite company. From a sinister, skull-like visage to an adorable puppy or pony, a well-made muzzle can bring a whole new feeling into your scene. 

As always, we recommend that Dominants keep a careful eye on the sub's breathing while they're muzzled and to arrange a non-verbal safe signal.
