The Sweet, Sexy Silence of Ball Gags
Let’s talk about ball gags.
At first glance, you might think there’s not that much to talk about; the structure is extremely simple: a round ball attached to a strap that can be fastened around the wearer’s head, with the ball fitting snugly between their teeth.
But like all great sex toys, there’s much more to them than you see at first glance. There’s an incredible amount of psychological power in that small, simple package, and used right, it can heighten sensation, intimacy, and pleasure in your BDSM scene.
Most of us probably saw a ball gag before we knew what BDSM was. Almost certainly before knowing that we were kinky. They’re as likely to show up in crime thrillers or horror films as steamy erotic romances. You might have seen one recent example in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, where Samara Weaving’s character and her sister are abducted by the villains.

This range of contexts and associations means that just bringing out a ball gag for the first time can trigger a complicated tangle of emotions: It’s hot; it’s scary; it’s kinda…. both?!?
The beauty of BDSM is that we get to play with all of those feelings, hopefully transforming them into a really hot, transformative kind of pleasure. But in order to get there, we also need to be respectful of them. A few questions to ask when introducing a ball gag to a partner include:
- Do they have any breathing problems or heart issues? Someone with asthma, sleep apnea, or other disorders might want to be very cautious about using gags — or avoid them entirely.
- Do they have any fears or trauma around being unable to speak? Ball gags can intensify even light bondage because the sense of being unable to speak or cry out hits us in a very primal place. The restraint becomes more than just physical. All of a sudden, you can’t cry out or call for help. You can’t even express your fear or excitement. That might be exactly what you’re looking for in your scene, but if you or your partner has a history of abusive relationships or assault, you should take that into consideration.
- How big a gag can you safely use? Most of the gags that you’ll find in the Stockroom’s collection range from 1.5” to 2.0”, but if you look around, you’ll find gags that are the size of a tennis ball. (Whether you can find someone who can take that into their mouth is another question, but we encourage exploration.)
When starting out with ball gag play, you probably want to begin with smaller gags and work your way up. Remember that a large gag will not only prevent speaking and breathing through the mouth, but it might also make it difficult to swallow, which in turn can lead to choking.
Ball Gags, Consent, and Safety Signals
Of course, the main point of a ball gag (or any other kind) is to stop the wearer from speaking. But that also makes verbal safe words useless if the action starts to get too intense for the partner wearing the gag. So introducing a gag into your scene is definitely one of those situations where you need to negotiate a nonverbal safe signal to stop the action.
Just what that signal should be depends on your situation, the nature of your scene, where you are, and your personal preferences. But here are a few examples to start you off:
- Give the submissive partner a stick or other object that they can drop when they want to stop the action. As soon as it hits the ground, everything stops.
- Quick shaking of the head, as in a traditional “no” signal.
- Opening and closing their hands, or clapping them. Of course, this may or may not be possible, depending on whether or not their hands are restrained.
- Have them hold a small flashlight, clicker, or beeper that can be activated by pressing a switch. These are just a few suggestions. You can probably come up with lots more.
A Few of Our Favorite Ball Gags
Since we work with these things every day, we have opinions. To illustrate some of the differences and options you have when choosing a gag, here’s a few from our own inventory.
KinkLab Red Silicone Ball Gag (Beginner)
This is a very basic silicone ball gag that’s perfect as a first purchase to see if ball gags really have a place in your BDSM routines. The diameter is a comfortable 1.625 inches (4.13 cm). Medical-grade silicone like this is one of the best materials you can use for ball gags: It’s soft on the teeth and jaw, and it’s nonporous, making it easy to clean.
No matter what your gag is made of, we recommend always cleaning it before and after each scene. Our own Premium Toy Cleaner is made for just this sort of thing, but any mild detergent or soap should do the trick.
When you start to shop around, you’ll find ball gags made out of every conceivable material. Silicone is one of the most common and generally reliable, but you’ll also find them made of plastic, rubber, leather, and even wood. Keep in mind two things: 1) during hot play, the wearer might bite down accidentally; when using the harder materials, like wood, that can result in a broken tooth or jawbone. 2) These materials are going to vary in how porous they are, and thus in how easy they are to clean. If you use more porous materials like wood and some forms of rubber, you might want to consider reserving that gag for one person.
Silicone Breathable Ball Gag (Beginner)
Breathable ball gags like this one are made to address the problem of the gag making it hard for the sub to breathe through their mouth. With a diameter of 1.875” (4.76 cm), it’s a little bigger than the first, but still comfortable enough to work as a first gag.

In addition to letting the submissive breathe, the holes have another advantage: They allow saliva to trickle out. If you love the look of a bound and drooly sub (or the feel, if you are the sub), this is definitely one that you’ll want to take a look at.
KinkLab Jawbreaker Gag (Intermediate)
Remember when we said that you’ll find gags made out of almost every material conceivable? Here’s an excellent example at work. The Jawbreaker Gag is literally a piece of hard candy to satisfy your submissive’s sweet tooth while they’re in service.

This is one of our favorites, but you should probably use it after trying more conventional gags out first. While the candy might be a delicious treat to suck on, it’s also much harder than the silicone the first two use. Thus, it requires a bit of caution. However, if you have the experience and the desire, it’s a great little twist to put on your classic gag.

Like the breathable gag, it can also produce a lot of lovely drool to add to your scene. We do make an exception to what we said about cleaning the gag, though. Keep soap, detergent, and sex toy cleaner off this one.
K9 Muzzle with Removable Silicone Ball Gag (Intermediate)

Sometimes gags come as part of other pieces of gear, as with this hood. The K9 Muzzle is very popular among puppy play enthusiasts, and the removable ball gag gives you a good way to silence that puppy that just won’t stop yapping and barking.

The K9 Muzzle actually comes with two silcone ball gags: a small (1.6 in./4.1 cm diameter) and a large (2 in / 5.1 cm diameter), so you can decide just how much discipline the pup needs.
Rose Ball Gag (Intermediate)

Kinksters always have a way to put their own spin on romantic and sexual traditions, and here we have a very kinky way to present your beloved with flowers. The Rose Ball Gag combines several of the features of the others we’ve shown you: It’s made of high-quality silicone, it has a hole for breathing, and a strap made of comfortable leather. The ball is on the wider side, at 2.67 in. / 3.99 cm diameter.

This has been a really popular variation, and if you have a special sub (or want to show special appreciation to your dominant), it makes for a very sweet and romantic gift.
Screw Ball Mouth Gag (Advanced)
Here, we have an example of a ball gag that’s built for those who have tried all the other ones out and something that’s a little…. more.

While your typical gag sits at the front of the mouth, the Screw Ball comes with a crank handle that will let the dominant partner slowly push the ball up to three inches into the sub’s throat.

As you can imagine, this requires a lot of caution on both partners’ part; you want to make sure not to push back too quickly, and to make sure that they’re not having any trouble breathing. But done properly, it can create a very hot scene that tests physical and psychological limits.
