Thursday, Sept 19: Free “Intro to Rope Bondage” Workshop with Kitt

Thursday might be one of the most frustrating days of the week: You’ve made it past Hump Day, but you’re not quite to the weekend. We’ve got just the thing for you: on Thursday, September 19, we’ll be holding a free “Intro to Rope Bondage” workshop with the Stockroom’s Resident Instructor, Kitt.

If you haven’t already had the pleasure, Kitt is an enthusiastic rope bondage nerd, who’s taught at Stockroom University and Devil Mask Studio. Students and staff alone have been charmed by her charismatic and friendly approach to bondage play, and we’re looking forward to having her do even more.

The “Intro to Rope Bondage” workshop takes a much more informal approach than our Stockroom University classes. For one thing, it’s in-person only; there’s no livestream option for these. For another, it’s a more social experience than Stockroom University classes; come alone, with a partner, or make a bondage buddy when you arrive. Whichever option you take, Kitt will help you to lay the groundwork for a successful rope journey — whether this is taking your first step into shibari play or you’re continuing on a longer road.

Kitt will begin the evening with a discussion around terminology, safety, and consent. Following that, she’ll move into rope handling skills, single and double column ties, and if there’s time, some tensioning and lock-off exercises.

Remember: This is for all levels of experience. As Kitt says, “This is the place where we all begin together.”

Equipment

You don’t need to bring any equipment of your own to learn, but the store will be staying open thirty minutes later than usual to accommodate any needs. However, some recommendaitons:

Safety Shears

In any bondage play, you should always have a pair of safety shears on hand. These are similar to the scissors that doctors and EMTs use to cut off bandages. They’re designed with a blunt tip so that they can be slipped under snug bindings without slicing through the person’s skin. We have these for purchase online or in the store.

Rope

Of course, rope takes center stage. The question you’ll want to ask yourself is what kind of rope you want to use. Material preference is a highly individual matter, and can be a whole field of rope nerdiness all on its own. One thing that you’ll want to take into account when starting out, though, is that some materials cause rope burn easier than others. For instance, nylon ropes will cause friction burns much easier than hemp. You can avoid this kind of accident by being careful how quickly you draw the rope across the skin.

The Stockroom carries a variety of ropes for you to buy online or in the store:
